Job Brief
We are seeking a talented and experienced Theater Production Lighting Project Engineer to oversee the planning, design, and implementation of lighting projects within theatrical productions. This role requires a unique blend of technical expertise in lighting systems, project management skills, and a passion for creating immersive visual experiences. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with production teams, lighting designers, and technical staff to ensure the seamless integration of lighting solutions that enhance the artistic vision of each performance.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Project Planning: Develop detailed project plans, timelines, and budgets for lighting installations and upgrades in theatrical venues. Collaborate with stakeholders to define project objectives, scope, and requirements.
- Lighting Design: Work closely with lighting designers and creative teams to translate artistic concepts into technical lighting designs. Select appropriate lighting fixtures, control systems, and accessories to achieve desired visual effects while adhering to budgetary constraints.
- Technical Documentation: Prepare Material Submittals, Shop drawings, and documentation for lighting systems, including fixture layouts, circuit diagrams, and control protocols. Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and venue specifications.
- Procurement and Resource Management: Identify lighting equipment and materials required for each project and manage procurement processes. Coordinate with suppliers, vendors, negotiate contracts, and oversee delivery logistics.
- Project Execution: Lead the implementation of lighting projects from inception to completion. Supervise installation activities, equipment setup, and system integration, ensuring quality workmanship and adherence to project timelines.
- Testing and Commissioning: Conduct thorough testing and commissioning of lighting systems to verify functionality, performance, and compliance with design specifications. Collaborate with lighting designers and production teams to fine-tune lighting cues and effects during rehearsals and performances.
- Training and Support: Provide training and technical support to production staff, crew members, and venue personnel on the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of lighting systems. Ensure a smooth transition of knowledge and skills to facilitate ongoing operation and upkeep.
Requirements and skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Theater Technology, or related field. Additional training or certification in lighting design or project management is advantageous.
- Proven experience in lighting design, implementation, and project management within the theatrical or entertainment industries.
- Strong knowledge of theatrical lighting fixtures, control systems, and dimming protocols, including DMX, Art-Net, and sACN.
- Proficiency in lighting design software such as Vector Works Spotlight, Light Wright or similar tools.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
